Finding My True North (and Why Laughter Is Still My Best Medicine)

August 25, 2025

Hi Friends,

Today marks my eighth glorious day at TrueNorth Health Center here in Santa Rosa. My final presentation is this morning at 10 AM, and you can watch it for free on TNH TV.

We had originally planned to stay until Tuesday, but since Dr. Goldhamer had to leave early to record the prestigious Diary of a CEO podcast, we decided to wrap up after my sixth presentation today.

Now don’t get me wrong—we absolutely love coming to TrueNorth. But being here without Dr. Goldhamer is kind of like going to Disneyland and discovering Pirates of the Caribbean is closed. He’s truly the heart and soul of this place (although, ironically, he’s been accused of not having either! 🤣). I did have two chiropractic appointments with him before he left, and he really helped the pain from my costochondritis.

Even so, it’s been an amazing week. If you’re struggling with any health challenge— excess weight, food addiction, chronic health issues—or even if you’re perfectly healthy but just need a reset, I can’t recommend TrueNorth enough. One night here costs less than most hotels in California, and instead of just a room, you get three gourmet buffets a day plus world-class lectures. Honestly, it’s the healthiest vacation you’ll ever take.

Finding My Purpose

I also love the name TrueNorth, because finding your True North isn’t just about geography—it’s about finding your purpose in life and what truly lights you up.

For me, Cancer was the wake-up call that I hadn’t been living my deepest passion. What I really wanted to do all along is Comedy!

Do you remember Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own yelling, “There’s no crying in baseball”? Well for me, there’s no cancer in comedy. The hours I spend writing, performing, or even just in improv class are the hours I’m not thinking about scans, treatments, or prognosis. And the science agrees—laughter really is the best medicine for the immune system. That’s why I’m so excited about the Plant Powered Party happening next week. My dear friend Benji, the event producer, has arranged for the whole thing to be livestreamed so you can join from anywhere.

Not only will you see some of your favorite plant-based doctors and chefs, but you’ll also get to watch the comedy show onSaturday night—featuring eight comedians, including myself and two of the plant-based doctors, Dr. Niki Davis, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman. (Don’t believe he’s funny? Watch this!)

Three of the comedians have actually been on The Tonight Show, and my normally introverted husband, Charles, is doing a set too.

And here’s my question for you to take into the week:
Have you found your True North—and are you living it?

Please don’t wait for cancer or a crisis to start living your best life.

Love & Kale, Chef AJ.
