From Costochondritis to Cancer Camp (and Everything in Between!)

September 15, 2025

Hi Friends,By the time you’re reading this (assuming you open your email on Sunday 🤣), I’ll be heading home from Scotts Valley, where I just had an amazing weekend at Camp Weiser. If you watch my show regularly, you know this wonderful camp hosts cancer patients and their families every year — for free — giving us a chance to forget about illness for a few days. I was allowed to bring five people, so of course I brought Charles, my Vegas buddies Lissa and Nate (who bonded over raw food romance), and two of my most fun local friends, Maureen and Trish. The highlight for me? Improv classes with Patrick Bristow, who came as a volunteer! (Yes, the same Patrick from Ellen and The Morning Show.) I’ll share more details next week, but if you know an adult with cancer who’d love this experience — or if you’d like to volunteer or donate — please watch this short video:

🐾 Shiloh UpdateBig week for my shy little guy: Shiloh started obedience school!

With his traumatic past, he’s been timid, but I think he’s beginning to realize this is truly his forever home. Especially now that he’s got his very own condo — yes, a pup palace of his own!

🩺 Health Update

Good news! My oncologist reviewed my latest CT scan disc with a Stanford radiologist, and the verdict was: “slightly improved.” The tumor is a bit smaller, and it looks like the Keytruda is working.

I’ll be doing three more treatments (once a month), then reassessing in December with another CT scan and brain MRI. I’m not exactly looking forward to going back, but at least this round will be dosed by weight — hopefully with fewer side effects.

The best part? I’m finally off steroids, which I’d been on since that ER visit for costochondritis. During that scare, I had every cardiac test imaginable (including a stress test with a radioactive tracer and an echocardiogram). The cardiologist’s conclusion: stellar cardiovascular health — so stellar I probably won’t need to come back. (After meeting so many “-ologists” this past year, that felt like a small victory! 🤣)

Love & Kale, Chef AJ.
